USEPA Regions 4 and 6 Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS) Status and Trend Assessment Surveys and Biological Assessments
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regions 4 and 6 (EPA) are responsible for the management of Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Sites (ODMDS) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and the mid- and south-Atlantic. As a part of its management of ODMDSs, the EPA conducts routine (10 - 15 yrs) trend assessment surveys at the ODMDSs. A trend assessment surveys were carried out in 2020 for the Morehead City, Wilmington, Matagorda, Corpus Christi and Brazos Island Harbor ODMDS sites. The purpose of these surveys was to collect data to assess performance and site conditions relative to disposal operations and to assess areas for potential disposal site expansion. One objective of the Status and Trends survey was the biological and physical characterization (sediment texture) of the benthos at the Sabine-Neches ODMDS and Reference sites. Barry A. Vittor & Associates, Inc. provided the macroinfaunal analyses for these projects. Our responsibilities included the preparation of a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), benthic macroinfauna taxonomy, data analyses including multivariate statistical comparisons of benthic assemblages between the ODMDS and Reference sites as well as comparisons to data collected in previous studies, and report preparation.
Relevant Tasks:
-
Development of a project specific QAPP
-
Benthic macroinfauna analysis
-
Statistical comparisons between sites and years
