Wetlands and other aquatic resources are federally protected under the Clean Water Act of 1972. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been given the responsibility to define what constitutes a wetland and regulate the use of wetland habitats. Technical guidelines for establishing where wetlands exist have been developed for the purpose of establishing the jurisdictional boundaries between wetlands and uplands. This is referred to as Wetland Delineation.


There are many potential reasons a property may require a wetland delineation. Some of which include, due diligence before purchasing property, pre-planning of development projects, and/or for the purpose of obtaining building permits.


Our company has been performing wetland delineations since the 1970's, predating any written guidelines on the process, making us pioneers in this industry. Today, BVA continues to closely follow the latest legal guidelines of the delineation procedure, updating our practices and techniques as needed to comply with current regulations.



While most wetlands are easily identified, there are many different wetland habitats that are less obvious and often mistaken for uplands. At BVA, our experts utilize their extensive knowledge of soils, vegetation, and hydrology to accurately delineate the boundaries between uplands and wetlands. We provide accurate on-site assessments and demarcation of wetland boundaries, as well as a complete GIS mapping of those boundaries with sub-meter accurate GPS for use in planning or permitting.
